Zero-click search, explained
A zero-click search happens when someone gets what they need without leaving the results page. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, map results, weather and sports boxes, and now AI Overviews and AI Mode can all satisfy a query on the spot. AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity extend the pattern: the answer is the product, and a click to a source is optional.
For simple questions this is convenient for users and largely unavoidable for businesses. For considered decisions, such as choosing a law firm, a surgeon, a builder or a wealth adviser, people still visit sites to compare and verify. But the answer they read first shapes which sites they visit. If a business is not named, or is described poorly, it may never be considered.
The response is not to chase clicks at any cost. It is to treat on-page presence as visibility in its own right: being the source quoted in a snippet or overview, keeping the knowledge panel and Google Business Profile accurate, and making sure AI answers describe the brand correctly. Measurement shifts accordingly, from traffic alone toward impressions, share of AI answers and the quality of inquiries that do arrive.
