AI Overviews, explained
AI Overviews are Google's AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some search results pages. They grew out of Google's earlier Search Generative Experience experiment and were rolled out in the United States in 2024, then expanded to many more countries. An overview answers the query in a few sentences or a short list and links to the pages it draws on.
For businesses, AI Overviews change the first thing a searcher sees. For many informational and comparison queries, the summary sits above the organic results and can answer the question outright, which contributes to zero-click searches. Being one of the linked sources, and being described accurately in the summary, becomes a form of visibility in its own right.
Google has said that the same fundamentals apply as for search generally: pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear in results, and there is no special markup or file required to be included. In practice that means sound technical SEO, content that answers the question directly and credibly, and a clear entity presence. Structured data helps search engines understand a page, but it is not a switch for inclusion.
