Google AI Mode, explained
AI Mode is a separate, conversational way of searching inside Google. Where AI Overviews add a summary to a normal results page, AI Mode replaces the results page with an AI-written response, supporting links and the option to ask follow-up questions. Google introduced it in 2025, first as an experiment and then more broadly.
AI Mode is designed for longer, more complex questions, the kind that previously took several searches: comparing options, weighing trade-offs, planning. To answer them, Google breaks the question into related sub-queries, searches for each, and combines the results. That means a business can be retrieved for questions it never targeted directly, provided its pages answer the component questions clearly.
For premium brands and professional firms this matters because considered purchases are exactly the kind of question AI Mode is built for. The work to appear well is the same as for other answer engines: sound SEO so pages are found and retrieved; clear, specific content that answers real client questions; consistent entity information; and credible third-party sources that confirm what the brand says about itself. Visibility here is measured by testing realistic multi-part questions, not single keywords.
