For most of the history of search, the goal was simple to state: appear near the top of a list. A person typed a query, the search engine returned ten links, and the person chose one. Everything that followed, from the visit to the inquiry to the sale, depended on being chosen from that list.

Answer engines change the shape of the exchange. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google’s AI Overviews a question, they increasingly receive a composed answer instead of a list. The answer may name a few firms, summarize what each is known for, and cite a handful of sources. The person may never see a results page at all.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the discipline of making a brand understandable, credible and citable to these systems, so that when a relevant question is asked, the brand is part of the answer and is described accurately. It is the core of our AI visibility and AEO services.

A traditional results page is a set of options. An AI answer is a judgment. That difference matters in several ways.

  • Fewer places to appear. A results page has many positions. A composed answer typically mentions only a few brands, if any.
  • Description, not just placement. An answer engine does not simply list your website. It characterizes you: what you do, who you serve, how you compare. If that characterization is vague or wrong, ranking alone will not fix it.
  • Synthesis across sources. The answer is assembled from many inputs, including your own site, directories, reviews, press coverage and reference sites. Your website is one voice among several.
  • Conversation, not a single query. People ask follow-up questions. A brand that is clearly understood holds up across a sequence of questions; one that is loosely understood tends to drop out.

The practical consequence is that visibility now depends less on any single page and more on how coherently the wider web describes you.

What makes a brand citable

There is no single switch that earns a mention in an AI answer. The systems differ, and they change. But the brands that are cited reliably tend to share a set of qualities.

Entity clarity

Search engines and language models organize information around entities: people, organizations, places, products. A brand is easier to cite when it is unambiguous which entity it is. That means a consistent name, a clear statement of what the organization does, a defined location or service area, and clear relationships to its principals, locations and offerings. A firm that shares a name with others, or describes itself differently from page to page, gives these systems less to hold on to.

Consistent facts across the web

Answer engines cross-check. If your address, founding details, specialties or leadership appear one way on your website and another way on directories and profiles, the model has reason to hedge or to omit you. Consistency across your website, Google Business Profile, professional directories, social profiles and reference sources is unglamorous work, and it is foundational.

Authoritative third-party mentions

What others say about you carries weight that your own website cannot. Coverage in respected publications, listings in credible industry directories, professional association memberships, and substantive reviews all help establish that a brand is real, active and well regarded. For premium brands and professional firms, the quality and relevance of these sources matter far more than their volume.

Structured data

Schema markup lets a website state facts in a form machines can read directly: the organization’s name, address, services, people, reviews and frequently asked questions. Structured data does not guarantee inclusion in any answer, but it removes ambiguity and makes your own account of yourself easier to use.

Content that directly answers questions

Answer engines look for passages that resolve a question cleanly. Pages that state a clear answer early, define their terms, and address the specific questions clients actually ask are easier to draw from than pages built mainly around slogans. This is not a call for thin question-and-answer pages. It is a call for substantive writing that is organized around real questions and says plainly what it means.

How AEO relates to SEO

AEO builds on SEO. It does not replace it.

Many AI answer systems retrieve live information from the web, often through a search index, before composing a response. A site that is difficult to crawl, slow, poorly structured or thin on content is at a disadvantage in both settings. The fundamentals of good SEO, including technical health, clear site architecture, strong content and credible links, remain the foundation that answer engines draw upon.

Where AEO extends the work is in its emphasis:

  • From pages to entities. SEO often asks how a page can rank for a query. AEO also asks whether the brand itself is clearly defined and corroborated across the web.
  • From your site to the whole record. Third-party sources, reviews and reference profiles carry more of the weight.
  • From ranking to representation. Being mentioned is not enough. The description must be accurate and favorable.

In our approach, the two are planned together. Treating AEO as a separate tactic, detached from search fundamentals, tends to produce fragile results.

How to measure AEO

Measurement in this area is still maturing, and it should be approached with appropriate modesty. AI answers vary by phrasing, by user, by location and over time. No single check tells the whole story. Still, there are sound ways to track progress.

Prompt sampling

Define a set of questions your prospective clients are likely to ask, phrased in several natural ways. Run them across the major assistants at regular intervals and record whether your brand appears, how it is described, which competitors are mentioned, and which sources are cited. Over time, patterns become visible even when individual answers vary.

Accuracy of description

Track not only whether you are mentioned but whether the description is correct. Outdated services, wrong locations or confused identities are common and worth correcting at the source.

Citation sources

When assistants cite sources, note which ones. This shows which publications, directories and pages these systems trust in your category, and where your presence is missing. Improving your place in those sources is the focus of generative engine optimization.

Supporting signals

Traditional measures still apply: organic search visibility, branded search volume, referral traffic from AI assistants where it can be identified, and inquiries in which prospects mention having asked an assistant. These are indirect, but together they form a reasonable picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO or LLM optimization?

The terms overlap considerably. Answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization and LLM optimization all describe efforts to improve how a brand appears in AI-generated answers. The labels differ more than the underlying work does.

Can a brand pay to appear in AI answers?

Organic AI answers are not a placement that can be purchased in the way a search ad can. Some platforms are experimenting with advertising alongside answers, but appearing within the answer itself depends on how clearly and credibly the brand is represented across the web.

How long does AEO take to show results?

It depends on the starting point and on how often each system refreshes its information. Corrections to live, retrievable sources can be reflected relatively quickly, while changes to what a model learned during training take longer. It is best treated as ongoing work rather than a one-time project.
