Technical SEO

Definition: The work of making a website easy for search engines and AI systems to crawl, render, index and understand.

Technical SEO, explained

Technical SEO is the part of search engine optimization that deals with how a website works rather than what it says. It makes sure search engines, and the crawlers AI assistants use, can reach every important page, render it, understand its structure and add it to their index. Content and authority only count once that foundation is sound.

The work covers crawling and indexing (robots rules, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, redirects and status codes), site architecture and internal linking, page speed and Core Web Vitals, structured data, mobile rendering, and international settings such as hreflang. Most of it is invisible to visitors, which is why it is often neglected on sites built mainly for the eye.

Technical SEO matters most at moments of change. A redesign or migration can undo years of earned visibility if URLs change without redirects or templates drop important content. A regular technical audit, using a full crawl and Search Console data, catches problems before they cost rankings.
